Winsford Cricket Club

2024 Season Review

Winsford had suffered relegation from Division 1 in 2023 , not helped by losing a third of their matches to poor weather, and no one was really sure how the team would fare back in Division 2 under new captain Patrick Crane

Our first match was against Roadwater who had finished 5th in LEague 2 the previous year, so should be a good yardstick. In the very tightest of finishes, Winsford lost by just one run.

The second match was lost to weather, and the following week we played newly promoted Watchet.  That team was on a very strong charge having finished top of Division 4 in 2022, before winning Division 3 undefeated in 2023.

Winsford batted first and got to 146 on a tricky surface.  Watchet found it even harder though and were dismissed for 88 - just their second defeat in three years.

This was a portent of a great run of results, with Winsford beating Stoodleigh, Lydeard St Lawrence, Huish Champflower, Carhampton and Crowcombe.

That led to a top of the table return clash away at Watchet, who showed their true skill and inflicted a heavy defeat on us.

The remainder of the season saw some mixed performances, selection hampered by summer weddings unhelpfully taking place on Saturdays - but  Winsford still beat Stoodleigh, Huish Champflower and Carhampton while losing once more to Roadwater.  The league had been discussing the possibility of playoffs to settle promotion, but this idea was abandoned and Winsford were duly promoted in second place.

Lawrence Priest finished top of the batting averages with 41, followed by Jeremy Bingham and Andrew Blackmore (38). Ryan Dean had both the highest score of 77, and the highest season  strike rate of 148.

For the bowlers, Andrew Blackmore (18 wickets at an average of 15) and Dan Bowley (17 wickets at an average of 19) were once again the mainstay of the attack. Andrew also finished with the best economy rate across the season of 3.4 and best match figures of 6/31.

The ground once again hosted a very well attended Interhunt tournament, held in memory of Timmy Gill, and Winsford again played a friendly 20/20 match against Roche, Cornwall who were touring for a second year.
